Colorado Springs Spanish Academy

Colorado Springs is the second most populous city in Colorado, and the 47th-most populated in the United States. Founded in 1871, the city became a key post for gold rush supplies and later became the renowned resort area it is today. Colorado Springs has attracted people from almost every culture, including many Hispanics and Latinos. According to data from the 2006 U.S. Census, Latinos made up 56,489 of 399,452 Colorado Springs residents, or 14.1% of the total populace. Over 13 percent of the total population speaks a language other than English in their home, illustrating the need for competent Spanish speakers within the community, and good instruction for children to learn other languages.

A large city in its own accord, and within about an hour’s travel from the state capitol of Denver, Colorado Springs is large enough to boast an array of amenities for those seeking Latin culture. For example, there are plentiful Latin American dining opportunities in the area, The Pikes Peak Performance Arts Center offers a variety of themed productions, and Servants of the Holy Family even offers a traditional Latin mass. For cultural enlightenment, the Pioneers Museum is a very historical stop, and the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center’s events frequently feature art of Hispanic and Latin origin, such as the work of Pablo Picasso.

The diversity and strong Hispanic traditions found in Colorado Springs and central to the communities are two reasons why children will benefit greatly from understanding more about the Spanish culture and knowing the language.
